Every year, SBB [Swiss Federal Railways, Switzerland] transports about 285 million passengers and 56 million
net tonnes of freight. Its 3,000 route kilometres may be modest by
comparison with the 24,500 km making up Switzerland’s public transport
network as a whole, but its performance is impressive: SBB trains account
for 87% of all passenger-km and 90% of tonne-km.
Competition, already in full progress in commercial transport, is also
emerging in passenger traffic – both for international long-distance
traffic and for local traffic. As one of Switzerland’s largest employers,
the SBB focuses on the needs of its customers like security, availability
and punctuality to ensure its position as leading transport
company.
